What is important to you? Overcoming depression and fresh realizations
It's only a matter of time until we realize what is important to us. What we need and why. It's a season of trial and error, and learning and exploring, and wishing and regretting, all to get to where we know what we want and need. Doesn't that sound nice? Knowing what we want and the steps taken to get it. Well, as nice as it sounds, most of us know that that's not typically the case.
I've been in a season of realization lately, and I wanted to share a few of my thoughts with all of you. I've been realizing that there are unchangeable things about life. You may be saying, well, shouldn't you have already known that? Why yes, I KNEW that. But now, I ACCEPT it. I accept that there will always be things that are hard, unchangeable, or even things I can't stand. But, not everything in this world can be fixed or switched. Sure, most things can and should if it betters yourself. It's the times when things can't get fixed or switched that you enter a state of acceptance and realization. Realizing that your time and effort is better spent on focusing on a positive attitude about the uncomfortable situation rather than expelling negative energy. That's self care, that's realizing that YOU are worth giving yourself positive energy and not focusing on the negative. Although it often takes the same amount of energy to put effort into being positive, the outcome compared to negative feelings is substantially worth it.
Realization is great for many things, and it's a nice feeling to realize that each one of us has a chance to make this life all that we want. Depression is a funny thing because it will always, always tell you that you're stuck. That there's no escaping. That this is it. However it is right now, that's how it will be forever. But you know what I've realized? Depression is always wrong. Depression forgets to mention that as long as you are alive, this Earth is spinning and time is moving forward. Things are CONSTANTLY changing. So how in the world could things be EXACTLY like they are right now, forever? That's the biggest lie that Depression tells us. It is trying to steal your outlook on life by telling you that things won't change. Stop for a second and think about your life one year ago from today. What did that look like for you? Each one of our stories is completely different, but one thing I can guarantee you, no matter what, is that if you are reading this today & comparing today of your own life to one year ago of your own life, SOMETHING has changed. You may have a lot of comparable, unchanged facts like careers, spouses, illnesses, cars, even feelings. But, somewhere along your time line of the last year, something has been different. You've seen different places, eaten a different food, met a different person, went to a different grocery store, or worn a different shirt. You've changed something about your world, and that's why remembering that Depression is definitely lying to you when it says your situation will be like this forever, is so important to escape it.
Realizing the important things. Sorting out which "burdens" are worth it for you. Because realizing that each persons crucially important things are most definitely different than yours. Each persons burdens they carry around are different than yours. Each persons reactions to situations, outlook on things, opinions on anything, while they may be similar (enter close friendships or family bonds) here, they can still be different and that be OKAY. From anything and everything, it's okay to realize that even though other people are walking alongside you in the crazy journey called life, they're viewing things from their own eyes and mind, so it will always look a little different. Realizing that that is not a downfall of our world, but actually the beauty of it, is releasing. Walking down a sidewalk full of people with the upmost respect and empathy for each of their journeys is truly freeing. Stopping our own busyness and thinking about what others may be experiencing, some are walking through positive parts of their journeys, while others are walking through the hardest parts of theirs, that is the most positive and rewarding piece of information I have learned. This world sets up to be selfish, self centered, or oblivious to others. But that is no way to live. We interact with people in our lives every single day, so anything we can do to better understand our relationships with people, yes even strangers, creates a beautiful success in our minds. Realize what is most important to you, learn what is important to those close to you, and sympathize to what is important to those far around you.
So, while I don't know exactly what I want or how exactly to get there, I do know that the journey is the most beautiful part. The journey is what we live for. What if we never make it to our "goal". What if our journey ends before then? Wouldn't we want to live our best and most successful life, even just on our journey. That's what I have realized is the most satisfying thing and I hope this made you think about your own journey today, too!
